7 Reasons Your Website Isn't Generating Leads
Getting traffic but no enquiries? Here are the 7 most common reasons business websites fail to convert visitors — and how to fix each one.
The gap between traffic and leads is where most business websites fall apart. The good news is that the reasons are almost always fixable. Here are the seven most common culprits we see, along with practical steps to address each one.
1. There's No Clear Call to Action
This is the single biggest conversion killer. Visitors land on your site, read a bit, and then have no idea what to do next. If you're not telling people what action to take, they'll take the easiest one — leaving.
The fix: Every page needs a clear, prominent call to action. "Get a Free Quote," "Book a Consultation," or "Start Your Project" — whatever fits your business. Place it above the fold, repeat it throughout the page, and make the button visually distinct from everything else on the page.
2. Your Site Is Too Slow
Page speed isn't just a technical concern. It directly affects whether people stay long enough to become leads. Research consistently shows that pages taking longer than three seconds to load lose over half their visitors. On mobile, patience is even thinner.
The fix: Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights and address the biggest issues first. Common wins include compressing images, removing unused plugins, and switching to a faster hosting provider. If your site is built on bloated technology, a rebuild on a modern framework may be the most cost-effective long-term solution.
3. The Mobile Experience Is Poor
More than 60% of web traffic in the UK now comes from mobile devices. If your site is difficult to use on a phone — tiny text, buttons too close together, horizontal scrolling — you're turning away the majority of your potential leads.
The fix: Test your site on a real phone, not just by resizing your browser window. Check that forms are easy to fill in, buttons are large enough to tap, and text is readable without zooming. A responsive design isn't optional; it's the baseline.
4. There Are No Trust Signals
People don't hand over their contact details to businesses they don't trust. If your website has no reviews, no testimonials, no case studies, and no recognisable logos, visitors have no reason to believe you'll deliver on your promises.
The fix: Add real testimonials from real clients — ideally with names, businesses, and photos. Display any accreditations, awards, or professional memberships. If you've worked with well-known brands, show their logos. A dedicated reviews or case studies section gives hesitant visitors the confidence to get in touch.
5. Navigation Is Confusing
If visitors can't find what they're looking for within a few seconds, they leave. Overcomplicated menus, unclear page names, and buried contact information all create friction that kills conversions.
The fix: Simplify your navigation. Aim for no more than six or seven top-level menu items with clear, descriptive labels. Make your contact details visible on every page — ideally in the header and footer. A visitor should never be more than two clicks away from your most important pages.
6. You're Using Too Much Jargon
Industry terminology might make sense to you, but it often alienates the people you're trying to attract. If a potential customer lands on your site and doesn't immediately understand what you do or how you can help them, they'll find someone whose message is clearer.
The fix: Write your website content as if you're explaining your services to a friend who knows nothing about your industry. Replace technical terms with plain language. Instead of "We deliver bespoke enterprise-grade solutions," try "We build websites that help your business grow." Your customers want to know what you can do for them, not how clever your processes are.
7. There's No Sense of Urgency
Even when visitors are interested, they'll often tell themselves they'll come back later. Most of them won't. Without a reason to act now, people procrastinate — and your lead is lost.
The fix: Create genuine urgency without resorting to false scarcity. Limited availability ("We take on 4 new projects per month"), time-sensitive offers, or simply highlighting the cost of inaction ("Every month without a proper website is another month of lost leads") can all motivate visitors to take the next step today rather than tomorrow.
Putting It All Together
These seven issues rarely exist in isolation. Most underperforming websites suffer from three or four of them at once, and the combined effect is devastating. The good news is that fixing even two or three of these problems can produce a noticeable uplift in enquiries.
